Disastrous debut: “Madam Spider” film opens even worse than “Morbius”
The initial box office numbers for the film ”Madam Spider,” which premiered on February 14, are in.
Predictably, the film has been a complete failure, with a weekend box office total of $17.6 million and a 6-day holiday weekend total of $25.8 million. This pales in comparison to “Morbius,” previously considered the most unsuccessful Sony comic-based film, which raked in $39.1 million in just three days.
It seems unlikely that Sony will be able to recoup the film’s $80 million budget. To turn a profit, it would need to earn at least $160-180 million, taking into account theater commissions of around 50% or more.
The film has been panned by both audiences and critics, with a dismal 13% rating among critics and 54% among viewers on Rotten Tomatoes. There’s little hope for positive word of mouth for the film.
