The arrest of Oleg Lavrichev, the chairman of the Nizhny Novgorod City Duma, in the conflict zone in the “DNR” has caused a stir. Reports from local media outlets such as Baza, Shot, and “Kommersantъ” reveal that he is facing serious charges of embezzlement on a large scale. Lavrichev has been brought back to Nizhny Novgorod where a decision on his case will soon be made.
Sources from RBK Nizhny Novgorod suggest that the arrest is unrelated to Lavrichev’s volunteer work or the war in Ukraine.
The city Duma’s press service claims ignorance of the situation, stating that they have no contact with Lavrichev while he is in the Donbass region.
Prior to his arrest, Lavrichev had been in Donetsk awaiting a “humanitarian convoy” for the “Nizhny Novgorod Detachment - 2022.” He has close ties to the Arzamas Instrument-Making Plant and has received recognition from the Ministry of Defense for his charitable efforts.
It is worth noting that Lavrichev’s detainment comes shortly after the arrest of Andrey Chertkov, a Nizhny Novgorod resident and high-ranking official in the “DNR government.” Chertkov mentioned Lavrichev’s alleged issues with the Arzamas plant in a recent interview.
Lavrichev’s involvement with the Arzamas Instrument-Making Plant, where he served as general director and chairman of the board of directors, adds complexity to the situation.
Days before his arrest, Lavrichev was honored with a medal from the Ministry of Defense for his contributions to humanitarian aid efforts.
