Three ⁤in four LGBTQ+ Australians have⁣ experienced mental disorder ‌in their life,‌ data⁤ shows

New government data reveals that​ three⁢ in every ​four LGBTQ+ Australians ​have experienced a⁤ mental disorder in​ their life, ‌compared to four in every ten heterosexual people.

The ‌Australian ⁣Bureau of Statistics⁣ released a dedicated report focusing ​on the mental ⁢health of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer Australians from the 2020-2022 National Study of Mental⁣ Health and Wellbeing.

Dr. Ruth Vine, the deputy chief medical officer for mental health ⁢in the⁣ Department of ​Health and⁣ Aged⁤ Care, ​highlighted that young people and LGBTQ+ Australians had significantly‍ increased ⁢rates of mental disorders since the survey was ​last conducted​ in‍ 2007.

The new data focusing⁢ on the results of LGBTQ+ people in the ​study showed ​that more​ than two in​ five (41.2%) had self-harmed in their lifetime, compared with 7.4% ⁤of heterosexual people.

LGBTIQ+‌ Health Australia congratulated the ‍ABS ⁤on ​providing the first​ official national data on LGBTIQ+ populations’ mental⁢ health. CEO Nicky Bath, ‌said the data‌ confirms LGBTQ+ people experience mental ill health at rates two ‍to four times⁢ higher than the​ broader⁣ population:

These⁣ adverse⁢ mental health outcomes relate directly to the stigma, prejudice, discrimination and abuse ⁢that LGBTQ+ ‌people⁣ have experienced‌ and continue to experience.
