Three in four LGBTQ+ Australians have experienced mental disorder in their life, data shows
New government data reveals that three in every four LGBTQ+ Australians have experienced a mental disorder in their life, compared to four in every ten heterosexual people.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics released a dedicated report focusing on the mental health of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer Australians from the 2020-2022 National Study of Mental Health and Wellbeing.
Dr. Ruth Vine, the deputy chief medical officer for mental health in the Department of Health and Aged Care, highlighted that young people and LGBTQ+ Australians had significantly increased rates of mental disorders since the survey was last conducted in 2007.
The new data focusing on the results of LGBTQ+ people in the study showed that more than two in five (41.2%) had self-harmed in their lifetime, compared with 7.4% of heterosexual people.
LGBTIQ+ Health Australia congratulated the ABS on providing the first official national data on LGBTIQ+ populations’ mental health. CEO Nicky Bath, said the data confirms LGBTQ+ people experience mental ill health at rates two to four times higher than the broader population:
These adverse mental health outcomes relate directly to the stigma, prejudice, discrimination and abuse that LGBTQ+ people have experienced and continue to experience.
