Kosovo’s Prime Minister Albin Kurti accuses Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic of planning and ordering an attack in northern Kosovo to destabilize the country and provoke a war.
About 30 heavily armed Serbs attacked the village of Banjska last Sunday, engaging in a gun battle with Kosovo police and taking refuge in a Serbian Orthodox monastery. One Kosovo policeman and three Serb attackers were killed.
Later on, the police regained control of the monastery and discovered a significant amount of weapons and ammunition. Six injured members of the armed group were taken to hospitals in southern Serbia, as confirmed by Interior Minister Xhelal Svecla, while the remaining attackers fled.
Kurti informed Al Jazeera that the Serb “paramilitary formations” in Banjska possessed equipment that is not available on the open market and is manufactured in Serbia.
Although prosecutors and Kosovo police are still gathering information, Kurti alleged, “We have confiscated ammunition and weapons worth five million euros [$5.3m], all of which were manufactured in Serbian factories.”
“Hand grenades, machine guns, and everything we confiscated were produced in Serbia and cannot be found on the market. It is evident that the Serbian army provided these to the paramilitary formations,” Kurti stated.
