During a peace summit in Lucerne, Switzerland, US Vice President Kamala Harris pledged over $1.5 billion in aid to Ukraine’s energy sector and humanitarian crisis in the midst of its conflict with Russia. Harris, meeting with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, emphasized the importance of upholding international norms and supporting the country.
The aid package includes $500 million for energy assistance and $324 million redirected towards emergency energy infrastructure repair in Ukraine. This support aims to enhance Ukraine’s resilience to energy supply disruptions caused by Russian attacks and improve its energy system.
Additionally, Harris announced over $379 million in humanitarian assistance to aid refugees and those affected by the war, covering essential services like food, health, shelter, and sanitation for millions of Ukrainians.
Standing in for President Joe Biden at the summit, Harris highlighted the US commitment to Ukraine’s security and recovery efforts. Biden, who recently attended the G7 summit in Italy, will be returning to the US for a fundraising event in Los Angeles.
The US-Ukraine bilateral security agreement signed at the G7 summit underscores the strong partnership between the two nations. White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan will continue to support Ukraine by establishing working groups on key issues like repatriating Ukrainian children from Russia and enhancing energy security.
