After experiencing a rapid increase in popularity towards the end of last year and the beginning of 2023, it appears that OpenAI’s chatbot, ChatGPT, is now starting to lose momentum. According to data provided by internet analytics firm Similarweb to The Washington Post, global traffic to ChatGPT’s website on both mobile and desktop devices dropped by 9.7 percent last month. If Similarweb’s data is accurate, this decline signifies the first decrease in user activity for the chatbot. In June, app tracker Sensor Tower also observed a decline in downloads of ChatGPT’s iOS client after reaching its peak earlier in the month. OpenAI has not yet responded to Engadget’s request for comment.
The diminishing interest in ChatGPT seems to be part of a larger trend within the industry. Similarweb’s data reveals a decrease in the number of visitors to the desktop and mobile websites of Microsoft Bing, Google Bard, and Character.AI in recent months.
