The United States and the United Kingdom have conducted a recent series of strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen in response to the Iran-aligned group’s continued attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea.
The Houthis, who have control over a significant portion of Yemen, have been responsible for numerous assaults on ships in the Red Sea since November, causing disruptions to international maritime trade and raising concerns about the global economy.
On Monday, the US and UK, with support from Australia, Bahrain, Canada, and the Netherlands, announced that they had carried out eight strikes targeting a Houthi underground storage site, as well as missile and surveillance capabilities.
According to a joint statement, these precision strikes are aimed at disrupting and degrading the Houthis’ capabilities that pose a threat to global trade and the lives of innocent mariners.
The Houthis claim that the attacks are in response to Israel’s actions in Gaza and are intended to show support for the Palestinians.
Since mid-November, the armed group has carried out over 30 attacks on international shipping, as reported by the UK’s Ministry of Defence.
