JetBlue and American Airlines Northeast partnership undone by DOJ lawsuit victory

May 20, 2023
in Business

A federal judge has ordered American Airlines and JetBlue Airways to end their partnership in the Northeast, following a lawsuit filed by the Justice Department in September 2021. The lawsuit argued that the alliance was anti-competitive and effectively a merger that would drive up fares and hurt consumers. The trial began in Boston a year later and concluded in December. U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement that the decision was a win for Americans who rely on competition between airlines to travel affordably. Both airlines expressed disappointment with the ruling.
