Original from www.cnn.com At least seven people were killed on Tuesday when two Palestinian men in their twenties attacked a Jewish Synagogue in Jerusalem with a gun, knives and axes, Israeli security forces said.
The attack took place during morning prayer at the synagogue located in the ultra-Orthodox neighborhood of Har Nof, located in West Jerusalem.
The victims of the attack were police officers and worshippers, including four rabbis and three dual American-Israeli citizens. Five people were wounded in addition to the seven killed, according to a police statement.
The two attackers, identified by police as Palestinians from East Jerusalem, were shot dead by security forces.
The incident has heightened tensions in Jerusalem and there are fears that it could lead to further violence between Israelis and Palestinians in the city.
The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the attack “an act of terrorism” and pledged to take “strong action, both preventive and punitive” in response. He said he held the Palestinian Authority responsible for the attack, saying it was the result of “murderous incitement” from the Palestinian leadership.
The US State Department condemned the attack in a statement and said it was “an act of pure terror inflicted on worshippers engaged in the peaceful exercise of their religious obligations” and said it was “unacceptable in any society”.
In response to the attack, Israeli authorities have stepped up security in the city, deploying extra police units as well as closing some roads.
The attack has sparked concern among Jewish communities around the world, with organizations such as the World Jewish Congress demanding that measures be taken to ensure the safety of Jewish worshippers.
