Following the recent decision by Microsoft to shut down several studios, including Tango Gameworks and Arkane Austin, fresh rumors have surfaced regarding another concern for Xbox – a new installment of Perfect Dark. Multiple sources indicate that the project is facing significant challenges.
In a recent episode of the Giant Bombcast podcast, industry insider Jeff Grubb revealed that the reboot of Perfect Dark is still “struggling.” Despite assistance from Crystal Dynamics, little progress has been made since the game was announced in 2020. According to Grubb, the team at The Initiative has yet to finalize whether the game will be in first-person or third-person perspective.
Other industry experts and journalists have echoed Grubb’s concerns. Insider Shinobi602 confirmed that Grubb’s comments align with what he has heard. Blogger Liam Robertson hinted at the chaotic situation at The Initiative, suggesting it could be the subject of a documentary. RPG Site owner Alex Donaldson shared that he has gathered numerous troubling stories about the development of Perfect Dark, choosing not to disclose them out of respect for the developers. However, his patience is wearing thin,” Donaldson warned.
In a summer 2023 report by IGN, details about the spy action game were unveiled. Experts consulted by the journalist highlighted the slow progress and internal challenges faced during development. Management’s rejection of ideas has hindered the creation of a clear vision for Perfect Dark.
