Is it possible for Aldi’s supermarkets to dominate America? The German brothers, Theo and Karl Albrecht, founded Aldi in the 1950s, pioneering the discount grocer model. Despite their success in Europe, they are facing stiff competition from Lidl. However, Aldi Süd is determined to make a mark in America, with plans to open around 100 shops a year, outpacing Lidl and Aldi Nord. Last year, Aldi Süd announced the takeover of approximately 400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys supermarkets in five states, with many of them being transformed into Aldi markets. Jason Hart, the head of Aldi Süd’s American business, has promised to accelerate the expansion, with a $9bn investment over five years to open 800 new Aldis. This is in addition to the 2,400 Aldi stores already in operation.
