Beginning with the 2024 filing season, most taxpayers will have the option to go completely paperless. The IRS announced today its goal to achieve paperless processing for all tax returns by 2025. Through the IRS Paperless Processing Initiative, the agency aims to eliminate up to 200 million pieces of paper annually, reduce processing times by half, and expedite refunds by several weeks. This project is funded by President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.
The IRS anticipates that these changes will address the inconvenience of having to transmit digital documents in some cases while still having to mail paper documents in others. The US Treasury Department stated today that taxpayers have historically had to respond to mail notices for document verification, and IRS employees have had to manually enter numbers from paper returns into computers, resulting in significant delays for taxpayers and challenges for IRS staff.
