Iowa School District Implements AI to Prohibit Books


AI’s dark side is already emerging, with the technology being used for confidence scams, ​spam content, and now censorship. The school board of Mason City, Iowa is utilizing AI technology to create lists of ‌potentially banned books from the district’s libraries for the upcoming 2023/24 school​ year, as ⁤reported by the⁤ Globe Gazette.

In May, Senate File 496 (SF 496) was passed⁤ by the Republican-controlled​ state legislature and signed by Governor Kim Reynolds. This‌ legislation brings significant changes ‍to the state’s education ‍curriculum, including limitations on the availability of books in school libraries and classrooms. The ​books​ must now be deemed “age appropriate” and cannot contain “descriptions or visual depictions‍ of a sex act,” according to Iowa Code 702.17.
