Inquiry Launched by Canada to Investigate Allegations of Election Interference by China and Russia

Canada has appointed a judge to lead a public ‍inquiry into alleged election interference by‍ China and Russia. This ⁤decision ‌is seen as a victory for conservative politicians in the opposition who have been accusing the Canadian government of ⁤not adequately addressing these allegations. ⁤

Quebec Court⁤ of‍ Appeal Justice Marie-Josee Hogue has been assigned by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government to ⁢head the investigation.

“Foreign interference⁣ in⁣ Canadian democratic institutions is unacceptable,” stated Public Safety ⁣Minister Dominic LeBlanc during ‍a news conference.⁣

“Justice Hogue will be responsible for examining and evaluating interference by China, Russia,⁢ and other ⁢foreign states and non-state ⁣actors.”

Trudeau’s government has faced increasing criticism in recent months following media reports ⁣that suggested China attempted ⁣to interfere in the Canadian elections of 2019 and 2021.
