Individuals pretending to be Zelensky tricked the Federal Reserve chairman during a phone conversation.

In January, pranksters pretending to be Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky tricked Federal Reserve Chair Jerome H. Powell into having a conversation with them, as reported by Russian state television and posted online. The two Russian comedians who support President Vladimir V. Putin asked Mr. Powell questions about the American and global economy, and his responses were consistent with his public statements. A Fed spokesperson confirmed that Mr. Powell spoke with someone who misrepresented himself as the Ukrainian president, but emphasized that the conversation was in the context of the central bank’s support for the Ukrainian people and that no sensitive or confidential information was discussed. The video has been edited, and the Fed cannot verify its accuracy. The matter has been referred to law enforcement, according to the spokesperson.
