How Your Location Can Influence Your Perception of Climate Change Threats

Our planet has recently experienced its hottest month on record, with many places being affected by ‍fires or floods. While it ‍is difficult to directly attribute specific events to climate change, the frequency ‍of extreme weather events is increasing, and people are ‍becoming more aware of this trend.

However, not everyone perceives or feels this threat to the same degree. Our recent research, published in PLOS ONE, reveals a contrast in how ⁤individuals in different locations perceive this threat, particularly along‍ urban and rural ⁢divides.

Cities are impacted differently⁤ compared to rural areas. For example, urban areas have fewer natural surfaces, leading to issues with ⁢rainwater drainage, higher temperatures, and ⁢reduced evaporation.

Cities have ⁤often been at the forefront of climate ⁣action, and‌ movements like Fridays for Future, inspired by environmental activist Greta Thunberg, have primarily emerged in urban areas.

On the other hand, individuals living⁤ in ⁢rural⁤ areas often have a strong connection to their environment. They are intimately connected to nature and may ‍have a deep passion for it, especially if their livelihood depends on ⁣it.
