Hezbollah launches rockets at Israel as a “retaliatory” measure following the assassination of Hamas leader

Lebanese armed group Hezbollah ⁤has announced that⁤ it launched a series of 62 rockets ⁢at a crucial Israeli military post⁣ as a “preliminary response” to the assassination of a Hamas leader in Beirut earlier this week.

This development occurred as the European Union foreign policy chief met ⁢with the Lebanese ‌prime minister in Beirut on ‍Saturday, cautioning against ⁣Lebanon being dragged into a regional conflict stemming from Israel’s⁢ war on Gaza.

“In response to the heinous crime of assassinating the esteemed leader Sheikh Saleh al-Arouri… the Islamic resistance [Hezbollah] targeted the Meron air⁣ control base with 62 missiles of various ‌types,” stated the ‌Iran-aligned group on Saturday regarding the attacks in northern ‌Israel.

The Israeli military previously reported that approximately 40 rockets were launched towards the Meron air surveillance base.⁢ In response, they targeted a “terrorist cell” involved in the attacks. No immediate casualties or damage have been reported.

Later on Saturday, Lebanon’s Jama’a Islamiya group announced that it had fired two rounds of rockets at ⁣Kiryat Shmona in northern ‌Israel.

Hezbollah and the Israeli army continued to exchange fire along the border ⁤area, with one Israeli attack penetrating deep into Lebanese territory and striking a house nearly 40km (25 miles) from the border, according to Al Jazeera’s⁣ correspondent in Lebanon.
