The Qassam Brigades, Hamas’s armed wing, announced that Nadav Popplewell, a British-Israeli captive, passed away due to injuries from an Israeli air strike a month ago.
Shortly after releasing an 11-second video showing Popplewell with a bruised eye, the group made the revelation on Saturday.
In the video circulating on social media, a man identifying himself as Nadav Popplewell from Nirim kibbutz in southern Israel is seen wearing a white T-shirt. The text in Arabic and Hebrew warns, “Time is running out. Your government is lying.”
Popplewell was captured during the Hamas-led attack on Nirim on October 7, as reported by Israel’s Ynet news site. His mother was also taken captive but later released during a prisoner exchange between Hamas and Israel last year. Popplewell’s brother was killed in the same attack, according to Ynet.
This recent video release on Hamas’s Telegram channel marks the third time in less than a month that captives held in Gaza have been shown.
On April 27, Hamas shared a video featuring two captives, Keith Siegel and Omri Miran, alive. Just three days earlier, another video showed captive Hersh Goldberg-Polin alive as well.
These videos are part of a strategy to increase pressure on the Israeli government to secure the release of remaining captives.
Al Jazeera’s Stefanie Dekker, reporting from Amman, highlighted the significance of releasing these videos on Saturdays when protests occur in Tel Aviv, as a means of influencing the Israeli government.
Despite these efforts, the policies of the Israeli government have not been swayed by these tactics.
Over the weekend, the Hostages and Missing Families Forum in Israel issued a statement in response to the situation.
