Hamas and PIJ present joint proposal for peace in Gaza under UN supervision

Hamas has provided feedback on a US-supported proposal for‍ a ⁢Gaza ‌ceasefire and ​a swap ‌of captives for prisoners, according to Qatari and Egyptian mediators.

In a joint statement, Hamas and Islamic ⁢Jihad (PIJ) expressed‍ readiness‌ to engage ‍positively ⁢in reaching an agreement, emphasizing ⁣the need to halt Israel’s ongoing ⁤attacks on ‍Gaza.

Senior ‍Hamas‍ official Osama Hamdan mentioned⁣ that the group had shared their comments on the proposal with ⁢the ‍mediators, without disclosing specifics.

A Hamas representative informed Reuters⁣ that ⁤the group’s response underlined the importance‌ of ending Israeli ⁢aggression, withdrawing Israeli forces, rebuilding Gaza, and facilitating a ‍significant prisoner exchange.

Qatar and Egypt, in ‍collaboration with⁣ the United ⁤States,⁣ are reviewing the response and ‌continuing mediation efforts to achieve a resolution.

White⁣ House National Security Spokesperson John Kirby confirmed that‍ the ⁤US is assessing the response⁢ from Hamas.

Al Jazeera’s⁢ Imran Khan reported that Hamas and PIJ leaders have included amendments in their response, such as a⁤ complete‍ withdrawal from Gaza,⁢ including key border crossings.

According to Khan, the Israeli objective is to dismantle Hamas politically and militarily.
