On Monday – 20th May 2019, a gunman opened fire at multiple locations in rural Mississippi, killing his former wife and five others.
The man was identified as Willie Cory Godbolt, 35, of Bogue Chitto, Mississippi who was taken into custody by Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputies late Sunday night. According to the suspect’s statement, the shooting started during an argument with his estranged wife and her family.
The incident started outside a home in Brookhaven, approximately 90 miles south of Jackson. As the sheriff’s deputy arrived to investigate, the gunman shot and killed his estranged wife Barbara Mitchell, 55, and three other family members. The gunman then took the deputy’s patrol car and drove to a nearby house where he killed two other people and injured a seventh person.
Sheriff Steve Rushing stated that the incident was “senseless and tragic” adding that Godbolt’s victims included adults and minors alike.
Local and state leaders, including Governor Phil Bryant, also expressed deep sorrow for this tragic incident.
“Every life is precious and, as governor, I will continue to work to ensure the safety of all Mississippians,” Bryant said in a statement.
Authorities are still investigating the motives behind the shooting and further updates will be provided once they become available. The victims of this tragedy have been sent home for last rites and their families have our deepest condolences.
