Climate researchers often stress the importance of reducing carbon emissions for the greater good. However, a recent study reveals that some scientists may be exceeding their carbon allowances in just one week due to conference travel.
The study, published in Limnology and Oceanography Letters by Lund University and the University of Lausanne, analyzed emissions from an annual international water conference attended by around 1,500 people from 2004 to 2023. The average emissions per delegate were 1.3 metric tons of CO2, significantly impacting individual carbon budgets.
These emissions surpass the targets set by the Paris Agreement, highlighting the need for researchers to address their travel-related carbon footprint. Practical solutions, such as reducing air travel distances, are crucial in mitigating the environmental impact of conferences.
