Global Warming and Bureaucracy Leave Leonardo’s Ferry Stranded

During a class trip to Imbersago, the “Town of the Ferry of Leonardo da Vinci,” schoolchildren learned about the inspiration behind Leonardo’s genius. The guide explained how the flights of the river’s birds, the formations of its rocks, and the workings of its ships influenced his work. However, one student interrupted the lesson, asking why the ferry behind a chain and a sign reading “Service suspended” wasn’t moving. The answer was that the water needed to be high enough for the current to move it, and they were also looking for a new ferryman.

Ferries have been running on water currents and a taut rope above a narrow stretch of the Adda River for at least 500 years. Leonardo spent a lot of time in the area, studying the river and its surroundings. Today, however, the river is facing a new challenge: drought caused by climate change.
