Heightened security measures have been implemented in Paris, France, as the country awaits a crucial ruling on the constitutionality of controversial changes to its pension system.
The Constitutional Council, France’s equivalent of the US Supreme Court, has been barricaded in preparation for the decision, which could result in an increase in the country’s retirement age from 62 to 64.
Laureline Fontaine, an expert in French constitutional law, told CNN that the police operation to protect the court is unprecedented. “As far back as I can remember, I’ve never seen images like this before,” she said.
This year, sweeping protests have disrupted major services across the country over French President Emmanuel Macron’s proposal, a move that has also angered opposition lawmakers and unions. Uncollected garbage has piled up in the streets of Paris.
