Pakistani security forces have eliminated four armed fighters, including a highly sought individual, near the northwestern border with Afghanistan, as announced by the military on Sunday.
During an “intelligence-based operation” in the Khaisoor area of North Waziristan district, Pakistani forces engaged in a gunfight with the fighters. The military press release stated that four fighters, including a “high-value target” known as “Ibrahim,” were killed by the troops.
As per the military statement, a cache of weapons, ammunition, and explosives was discovered during the raid. The troops are currently conducting searches in the surrounding areas to locate any fighters in hiding.
“The Security Forces of Pakistan are committed to eradicating the terrorism menace from the country,” stated the military.
Previously, North Waziristan served as a safe haven for fighters until the military expelled them following an attack on an army-run school in Peshawar in 2014, which resulted in the deaths of over 150 people, mostly schoolchildren.
Although the army declared that the region had been cleared of fighters after the years-long operation, sporadic attacks continue to occur, raising concerns that the local Taliban, known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), has sought refuge in Afghanistan and is regrouping there.
