Former mayor of Kupyansk in the Kharkiv region, Gennady Matsegora, was targeted in a shooting at his residence in Stary Oskol. Reports from Mash indicate that he survived the attack but is currently in critical condition after being urgently hospitalized in Moscow.
The Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine has also confirmed the assassination attempt on the ex-mayor:
“On June 7, 2024, an assassination attempt took place in Stary Oskol, Russia, targeting Gennady Matsegora, a former mayor of Kupyansk in the Kharkiv region from the OPZZH party, who is considered a traitor to Ukraine. Matsegora was known to have collaborated with the Russian occupiers.”
Recent reports suggest that Matsegora was serving as the director of the FOK “Georgievsky”.
Ukrainian media outlets have accused Gennady Matsegora of betraying his city to the Russian military during the initial stages of the invasion. Subsequently, the Kharkiv regional prosecutor’s office has filed charges of state treason against him.
