Former DeepMind Co-Founder Joins Microsoft to Spearhead Copilot AI Projects

Microsoft has made a⁣ significant move ⁤by hiring Mustafa Suleyman, the former co-founder of DeepMind, an AI startup acquired by Google in ⁣2014. Suleyman will be taking on the role ⁢of executive vice president and CEO of Microsoft AI, reporting directly to CEO‍ Satya Nadella.

During his time at Google, DeepMind ‌became a leader in AI research and attracted the attention of Tesla CEO‍ Elon Musk, who founded the nonprofit AI lab, OpenAI, to counteract Google’s growth.

According to Casey ‍Ellis,‍ founder and Chief Strategy Officer at‍ Bugcrowd, Microsoft’s appointment of Suleyman signals their strong⁢ commitment to⁣ AI as a core⁢ strategy.

Suleyman left‌ Google in 2022 to co-found and lead Inflection AI. He will be joined at Microsoft by Karén ⁢Simonyan, ⁤Inflection’s ⁤co-founder and chief ‌scientist,⁢ along with several other Inflection employees.

The newly formed Microsoft AI group will focus‌ on developing ‍the Copilot chatbot, integrated into⁤ various ‍Microsoft products, and will also oversee ⁣consumer AI products and research. Mikhail Parakhin and Misha Bilenko will also be part‍ of ⁤the group.

Inflection will ⁣continue with ⁣a new CEO, ⁤Sean White, and will bring its Inflection-2.5 AI model to Microsoft⁤ Azure and other cloud platforms.

Microsoft’s ⁣hiring of‌ Suleyman is ⁣part ‍of a⁤ larger trend of‌ high-profile shifts⁣ in the AI industry, with⁣ other companies making similar moves, such as SAP appointing Walter Sun ‌as its new global head of artificial intelligence.
