The choice between Otto and Gav in the Final Fantasy 16 quest “Letting Off Steam 1” is an oddly permanent one. A three-part quest line, this objective sends players across the map in pursuit of materials that Mid needs to build an airship. Even though players can’t actually ride the ship, this is one of relatively few FF16 quests that are actually worth doing and don’t completely waste the player’s time. The rewards are half decent, with some serious Renown points at stake. But what’s even more interesting is the depth that these quests grant to Mid, expanding the audience’s knowledge of her relationship with her father and giving her a lofty goal.
[Warning: The following article contains spoilers for Final Fantasy 16.]And Mid’s not the only one. “Letting Off Steam” refers to more than just the steam-powered airship that players will help build over the course of these three quests – it’s also a sly reference to how peaceful these tasks are, for the most part. They give FF16 players the opportunity to learn just a bit more about their allies in the Hideaway and, on two occasions, give players their choice of party members to chat with along the way. In the first “Letting Off Steam” quest, however, the choice comes down to Otto or Gav as the player heads out on a Stardust-gathering expedition.
Whether it’s Gav or Otto, the companion players choose for the “Letting Off Steam 1” quest in FF16 does not matter. Players can and should choose whichever character they would rather see more of. However, the choice is indeed permanent, and the scene the player doesn’t choose won’t be accessible until a second playthrough. Nothing else impactful will happen, either to the character the player chooses or the one they don’t; whomever they choose will join them on a calm, successful mission, and whomever they don’t will wait in the Hideaway. Clive will encounter his chosen companion at the appointed spot near the river in the Velkroy desert. He’ll then have to search the area and find five pinches of Stardust.
Once players have gathered the Stardust, they should return to Gav or Otto. This is the only place the quest diverges based on the player’s choice: Gav or Otto will suggest a stroll and a chat, and a brief dialogue scene will ensue. Depending on which party member the player picked, these scenes will naturally differ, lending a bit of character development to either Otto or Gav and their respective relationships with Cid and Clive. They’re not necessarily vital to the plot, but it can be nice to get a little more context around how the chosen character fits into the world of FF16. While both scenes are enjoyable, one of them is slightly more so.
It comes as something of a shock when Otto, FF16’s put-upon quartermaster, stretches his face into a grin and suggests a pleasant walk along Velkroy’s oasis. He and Clive pause by the riverbank, silently taking in the verdancy of the opposite shore and the colorful layers of rock before Otto begins to speak.
