There are a couple of weeks left until the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and Sony and Insomniac Games have posted a series of posters on the game’s official page in the PlayStation Store dedicated to secondary characters.
Here you can take a look at the official models of Rio Morales (a member of the city council and Miles’ mom), Ganke Lee (Miles’ best friend), Norman Osborn (a pathological liar, former mayor of New York, and co-founder of the world’s largest company), Harry Osborn (Norman’s son who has been battling the same disease his mother died from for the past few years), Hailey Cooper (an activist, artist, and one of Miles’ best friends), and the ever-present Mary Jane Watson (a reporter for The Bugle newspaper and an invaluable member of Spider-Man’s team).
The release of the official character posters has sparked old disputes that, apparently, have not subsided. Some fans do not like the appearance of Mary Jane in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (despite Insomniac Games’ assurances that the actress playing her has not changed at all), and this time they did not miss the opportunity to announce it to the world.
“Mom Mary Jane looks great, but where is Mary Jane?” – one user ironically writes, joking that the character looks older than in Peter Parker’s previous adventure. This is followed by messages like: “Whoever did this hasn’t seen a real person in ten years” or “She’s not ugly at all, she’s just not Mary Jane Watson. This is likely Insomniac Games’ worst design choice” and finally, “Imagine saving the world, coming home, and this is waiting for you.”
However, for some, it’s not just about the hairstyle: “Now that I see this, it’s obvious that it’s the same actress because she smiles the same way. But something is off. The colors have faded, and she looks ten years older than she should be.” It could go on and on, as finding countless other disapproving and/or mocking messages on the internet is not difficult, but it must be said that there are also many other fans who, on the contrary, highly appreciate Mary Jane’s new appearance. Thus, the community seems divided in their opinions.
Criticism of character models seems to have become a habit for Insomniac Games, as recently there have been complaints about Peter Parker as well. However, the game’s creators are going their own way: Insomniac did not change Mary Jane, and voice actor Yuri Lowenthal suggested that players “come to terms with it.” And console players will have to come to terms with it, while later, when the game is released on PC, users will be able to fix it themselves with modifications.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will be released on October 20, 2023, exclusively on PlayStation 5. The project’s pre-loading is scheduled for October 13. Reviews and ratings will be available for viewing on October 16 at 5:00 PM.
