According to state media, an explosion at the grain silos near the port of Derince in western Turkey has resulted in at least 12 people being injured.
Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency reported on Monday that three of the 12 injured individuals are in serious condition.
The governor of Kocaeli, Seddar Yavuz, where the port is located, stated on Monday that the explosion occurred around 2:40pm (11:40 GMT) near the Turkish Grain Board (TMO) silos.
“Preliminary assessments indicate that the explosion was caused by the compression of wheat dust during the transfer of wheat from a ship to the silo,” he added.
“While we were informed that a blast could potentially occur due to the compression of wheat dust, we are investigating all possible causes,” Yavuz said.
Yavuz also mentioned that health, search and rescue, and fire brigade teams were swiftly dispatched to the region following the incident.
