Diablo 4 will have quarterly Seasons with unique themes that offer players a chance to experience questlines that differ from those in the standard campaign. Each Season will have its own corresponding Battle Pass with rewards across three versions: Free, Premium, and Accelerated. The Seasons are designed to provide a constantly rotating means of replayability and post-game content. Developers at Blizzard have assured players that the paid Tiers are for cosmetic rewards only, and players can decide each Season if the thematic cosmetics are worth it to them.
Reviews for Diablo 4 have been very positive regarding the game mechanics, story, and design of this ARPG dungeon crawler. However, these reviews did not have a chance to see how the Seasons and Battle Pass will work, as the first Season does not begin until the middle of July 2023. The benefits and cost of the paid Tiers for the Battle Pass service could be worth it to some players but ultimately will come down to individual preference. Because the Battle Pass can be purchased for just one Season at a time, roughly three months, it could make it more appealing to players who are not sure if they will be continuing long-term or who just want to pick and choose what themes are most exciting to them.
Diablo 4’s Battle Pass is separated into 27 Free Tiers that anyone who is participating in the Season journey can access, and two paid versions with 63 Premium Tiers, for a total of 90 Tiers across the Season. The Free Tiers of the Battle Pass will provide players with free cosmetics and a special currency called Smoldering Ashes, which can be spent on Season Blessings for a character. These Season Blessings are limited to that quarter only and can give bonuses to collecting gold, XP, and more during that time. The Premium Tiers of the Battle Pass will provide no additional Season Blessings or other in-game advantages and will be focused entirely on more cosmetics inspired by the Season theme.
Players who have pre-ordered Diablo 4’s Deluxe or Ultimate Editions will receive access to either the Premium Battle Pass or Accelerated Battle Pass for Season 1 included as a pre-order bonus. Everyone else will need to decide if they would like to purchase a Battle Pass or stay with the free version for their Seasonal adventure. Each Season will bring a new Battle Pass, meaning players who want to utilize the paid Tiers will need to pay every three months.
Diablo 4 Developers have said that each Premium Battle Pass journey of the full 90 Tiers per Season will take about 75 hours to complete unless an Accelerated boost is used. Because there are only 27 Free Tiers, this can be completed much quicker, but will not be able to unlock all the extra cosmetic rewards that the paid version will provide. If a player decides they wish to upgrade to the Premium or Accelerated Battle Pass, they can do so at any point during the Season.
