Experts warn Israel’s supporters of consequences following ICJ verdict

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has issued interim orders to Israel in response to its war on Gaza, which experts say have limited immediate implications. The preliminary ruling, issued on Friday in a case filed by South Africa, accuses⁤ Israel of genocide‍ in Gaza. Despite Israel’s petition to dismiss the case being rejected, the ICJ has instructed Israel ⁤to allow aid into ⁤Gaza and prevent acts of genocide. Israel must also preserve evidence of its actions ⁢in Gaza and report back to the ICJ within a month. Additionally, the ICJ expressed concern for the Israelis captured by Hamas and called for their immediate release. While South Africa sees the instructions as a ‌call for an immediate ceasefire, ⁣Israel has stated that it will continue its campaign against‍ Gaza. According to Gerry⁣ Simpson, a law professor at the London School of Economics, only Israel can stop the bombardment of Gaza. The ICJ’s ruling puts Israel’s supporters on notice, making it difficult for‌ Prime Minister Benjamin⁢ Netanyahu to claim to be defending the West and the rules-based order.
