A study by Rutgers researchers suggests that Americans believe the British are generally more intelligent and informed. The research, published in the Journal of Pragmatics, examines how American and British English speakers use the word “right” in conversation. The study found that Americans use “right” to indicate they are already knowledgeable or informed about a given subject or situation, while British English speakers use “right” to indicate that what they hear is informative and relevant to the ongoing interaction. This difference in usage may lead Americans to believe that the British are smarter. The researchers also suggest that the British accent contributes to this stereotype, as it sounds more sophisticated than American accents.
