European Union (EU) legislators have taken a significant step toward ratifying legislation that would establish guidelines for the use and advancement of AI technology. The EU Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) and Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) have both given their approval to the proposed AI Act, setting the stage for formal voting in April. The Act requires organizations and developers to evaluate AI capabilities and categorize them based on risk levels. The legislation aims to ensure that AI systems used in the EU are safe, transparent, traceable, non-discriminatory, and environmentally friendly. While some have expressed concerns about over-regulation, others believe that innovation can thrive within regulatory boundaries. The rules are expected to be adopted smoothly as long as developers and resellers provide clients with the necessary information to comply.
