Apple is potentially facing a hefty fine of around $539 million (500 million euros) from the EU and a potential ban on its alleged anti-competitive practices within the App Store for music streaming services, as reported by FT. The European Commission is expected to make an official announcement regarding this ruling in the near future, according to five undisclosed sources familiar with the situation.
The investigation originated from a 2019 antitrust complaint filed by Spotify and revolves around the App Store regulations that previously prohibited developers from guiding users to alternative subscription options outside the app, potentially offering lower prices without having to account for Apple’s 30 percent fee. Although Apple has since relaxed these restrictions, the Commission is anticipated to declare that Apple violated EU antitrust laws and established “unfair trading conditions” for its competitors through the App Store’s “anti-steering obligations,” as reported by FT.
