Recently, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy made a significant announcement regarding the return to office policy for all corporate employees, including AWS staff. Starting in January, they will be required to work in the office five days a week. If I were an Amazon employee, I would choose to resign without hesitation.
I transitioned to remote work many years ago for two primary reasons. Firstly, I believed that if my physical presence was truly necessary at our New York City office, I could easily fly in on short notice. However, that need never arose. Secondly, I realized that working from my home office allowed me to be more productive and efficient.
It turned out that my decision was the right one then and continues to be so now.
The onset of COVID-19 demonstrated that many individuals could excel while working remotely rather than being confined to a traditional office setting.
In his communication, Jassy emphasized the benefits of in-office work such as improved teamwork and innovation. However, from my experience, it often fosters favoritism among certain groups and stifles individual contributions from introverts or minority members.
Virtual work environments prioritize performance over personal relationships or politics within an organization.
