“I want to ensure fairness by giving my niece and nephew, my sister’s children, the inheritance she would have received if she were alive.” – MarketWatch photo illustration/iStockphoto
Dear Quentin,
Upon my father’s passing, I am set to inherit a significant sum of money. Unfortunately, this means that my late sister’s children will not receive their mother’s share of the inheritance, as outlined in the previous will.
To uphold fairness, I am inclined to provide my niece and nephew with what would have been their mother’s inheritance. My father intentionally excluded his grandchildren from the will, causing hurt. How can I go about this without incurring gift taxes or other expenses?
