Despite Protests, EU Continues to Implement Tariff-Free Policy for Ukraine’s Grain

The European Union has decided to extend Ukraine’s tariff-free access to its grains for another year, despite protests from neighboring countries such as Poland. The decision was made by European Union ambassadors during a meeting in Brussels on Friday, with some concessions being made for Ukraine’s E.U. neighbors who have been affected by the influx of cheaper foodstuffs. The move was originally intended as an emergency measure to create cheap, secure land routes to allow vital supplies of grains out of Ukraine and alleviate a global food crisis triggered in part by Russia’s blockage of Ukrainian ports on the Black Sea. The European Parliament is expected to give formal approval next month.
