DeSantis, a Mysterious Figure in Foreign Policy, Commends U.S.-Japan Relations in Tokyo

Florida Governor and potential Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis met with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Monday during his first overseas trip since 2019. DeSantis expressed his support for the US-Japan alliance and hoped that the US would stand by Japan as it strengthened its defenses against North Korea and China. He stated, “I think Japan’s been a heck of an ally for our country, and I think a strong Japan is good for America, and I think a strong America is good for Japan.” DeSantis’s comments differed from those of current Republican front-runner Donald J. Trump, who criticized Japan’s trade policy and accused it of exploiting its military alliance with the US before becoming president in 2017.
