Masses of right-wing demonstrators gathered in Jerusalem on Thursday evening to support an Israeli government plan to overhaul the judiciary, which has caused deep division in the country. The crowd was largely made up of Israelis from the religious Zionist camp who want a more Jewish Israel that prioritizes their traditional values over the liberalism championed by the country’s old, secular elites. The demonstrators believe that these elites control an overactive judiciary, the mainstream media, and the bureaucratic establishment.
Families from all over the country and the occupied West Bank arrived on more than a thousand buses arranged by the organizers, as well as in private vehicles. This was likely one of Israel’s largest right-wing demonstrations in almost two decades and served as a counterweight to months of protest by the overhaul’s opponents. Despite the turnout, the atmosphere was peaceful and mostly upbeat.
