Back in June 2014—nearly a decade ago at this point—Dead Island 2 was revealed with a very good trailer and a 2015 release window. Only now, in 2023, following numerous delays, multiple studios, and even canceled versions, Dead Island 2 is almost here. In fact, it’s coming out a week early now, and only eight years late.
The first Dead Island, developed by Techland, launched in 2011. It wasn’t a perfect game, but its mix of first-person combat, open-world hijinks, co-op zombie killin’, and gorgeous tropical beaches connected with enough people to warrant its publisher trying to turn the game into a multi-game franchise. That flopped hard. Yet, that didn’t stop open-world zombie RPG Dead Island 2 from being announced at E3 2014 with that very memorable trailer involving a jogger. And then the game was delayed and delayed and different teams worked on it and it was thought to be dead and then re-announced and now, after all these years, Dead Island 2 is somehow coming out…

The highly-anticipated zombie survival action-adventure video game, Dead Island 2, has had its release date bumped up by a whole week. The eagerly-anticipated title, set to be released by publisher Deep Silver and developer Yager Development, will now be available to the public almost one-week earlier than previously planned.
Originally scheduled to launch in spring 2015 in Europe and North America, Dead Island 2 is now slated to hit retail shelves on March 29 in those regions, in addition to launching simultaneously in Australia and New Zealand on that date.
The next installment in the hit Dead Island video game series, Dead Island 2 promises to feature a new world, with an extensive storyline and a slew of game mechanics that build upon the initial concept, providing an even larger, more thrilling island experience.
In Dead Island 2, players will take on the role of a survivor who must to fight off the zombie hordes in-game. The game features four all-new survivor character classes, each with its own special abilities, weapons, and combat styles.
With its new release date, Dead Island 2 joins a plethora of current-gen titles heading to stores in early 2015, such as The Order: 1886 (February 20), Evolve (February 10), Assassin’s Creed: Unity (November 11), and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel(September 30).
Dead Island 2 is the follow-up to 2011’s critically-acclaimed Dead Island, and will be available on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, with a version planned for Windows PC in the future. Its new release date means that fans of the series will only have to wait a little over three months until they can explore the island once more.
