The story behind Diablo 4 is one that goes much deeper than it first seems once players stop and ponder what the Mother of Sanctuary, Lilith, is actually trying to say. While Lilith is most certainly the antagonist of the game, her motivations and thoughts behind her actions, or at least what she claims to be her reasoning, might be a bit surprising to some, as it presents a moral dilemma to ponder. The lore of the battle between former lovers Lilith and Inarius, the story of the creation of the Nephalem, and humanity itself, are in the spotlight throughout Diablo 4’s narrative, and it may not all be black and white.
[Warning: The following article contains spoilers for Diablo 4.]Within the dark world of Diablo 4 there is much more going on between the angels and demons than what the humans of Sanctuary are aware of. Inarius has his own goals and plans and is using his human followers as pawns in his game; while Lilith is a demon whose anger has been unleashed at the death of her child. The lowly villagers of Sanctuary are under constant assault from monsters flooding the landscape and hope itself seems to be lost. The options are limited and, unfortunately, pretty bleak for humanity in this world.
Over the course of the game, and particularly at the end of Diablo 4, Lilith is certainly not a hero. She does present some valid points, however, even if her means of trying to help was self-serving and would have also led to an incredible loss of lives. Blizzard’s simple dungeon-crawler offers some true moral ambiguity for players to consider, even though there is no option of directing a character’s choice to change the outcome of the story.
If Lilith really has knowledge that the Prime Evils are coming to destroy Sanctuary, and she feels that her ability to prepare the world is the only viable option, she could have meant well in her own twisted demonic fashion. Her plan seems to present the moral dilemma of whether it is necessary to sacrifice some lives in exchange for protecting the greater whole of humanity. But her means of going about her plans were inexcusable and there is also an open question of how many of her statements are false simply for manipulation’s sake, as she is, after all, a succubus at her core.
It could very well be that Lilith is attempting to manipulate humanity to form her own army to use to become the ruler of both heaven and hell, and her visions of Diablo returning that she provides the player are falsehoods. Inarius is not a shining example of good either, however, with a central focus on using humans as a means to get him back to Heaven.
