Contract teachers in Guinea are protesting and threatening further strikes due to payment arrears and lack of integration into the public system. The demonstrations took place from April 24-30 across various parts of the West African state, as reported by French news outlet RFI. Some teachers have not received their salaries for seven months, and the strike comes just one month before students are scheduled to take their end-of-year exams.
The Ministry of Territorial Administration and the Ministry of Pre-University Education announced the payment of salaries last week, but no date has been set yet, according to RFI. The ministries have stated that teachers’ contracts must be updated and fraudulent cases screened out before payment can be made.
“It is the first time that the two departments are examining the issue of contract teachers,” said Alseny Mabinty Camara, the national coordinator for contract teachers, in an interview with RFI. However, Camara remains sceptical.
