Baldur’s Gate 3 sparked a discussion about whether it should be considered a new standard for the role-playing game genre. The discussion began after the head of Strange Scaffold stated that Larian’s upcoming game should not be seen as the “future standard” for all RPGs.
Many professional developers, including those from well-known studios such as Obsidian and Blizzard, pointed out that Larian has unique advantages, such as vast experience and resources that most teams in the industry lack.
The founder and CEO of Larian Studios, Swen Vincke, recently shared his thoughts on this matter. He cited Assassin’s Creed as an example, noting that when it was released, there was a belief that other studios were doomed because they didn’t have the resources of Ubisoft. However, Vincke believes that this panic was unfounded, as there are still many teams creating diverse games of different directions and genres.
Vincke emphasized that standards in the industry are constantly changing, and there is no specific standard that should cause concern. He expressed surprise about the hype surrounding Baldur’s Gate 3, stating that the team simply aimed to create their own game, and it is strange that it became a topic of discussion even before anyone saw it.
Vincke noted that there are already many different standards in the RPG genre, citing games like Disco Elysium. He believes that developers can still offer many new ideas, and small studios can implement innovative concepts without needing an extensive team like the one that worked on Baldur’s Gate 3.
Although Baldur’s Gate 3 is a special type of game that Larian has been working on for over two decades, Vincke does not believe that it sets new standards for the RPG genre. He urged other developers to focus on creating their own games and finding their unique audience, as there are still many unexplored possibilities in the industry.
