A federal agency has filed a lawsuit against Chipotle, a restaurant chain, alleging religious harassment and retaliation. The lawsuit claims that a manager at a Chipotle location in Kansas forcibly removed an employee’s hijab, which is a headscarf worn by some Muslim women.
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) filed the lawsuit on Wednesday, stating that in 2021, an assistant manager at the Chipotle in Lenexa, Kansas, repeatedly harassed the employee by demanding to see her hair despite her refusal. The harassment escalated over several weeks, culminating in the manager grabbing and partially removing her hijab.
According to the complaint, the manager’s persistent requests for the employee to remove her hijab and his attempt to physically take it off were unwelcome, intentional, severe, and based on religion. These actions created a hostile working environment for the employee.
