The government of President Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua has expelled two nuns who worked at a nursing home in the country. This move is part of a wider crackdown on opposition leaders, journalists, and the Catholic church.

President Ortega has been targeting the clergy in Nicaragua, referring to bishops of the Nicaraguan Episcopal Conference (CEN) as “terrorists.” He accuses the Catholic church of supporting anti-government protests in 2018, which his government labeled an “attempted coup.”

The two nuns, who are both Costa Rican citizens, have now arrived in Costa Rica, according to the Diocese of Tilarán-Liberia.

Bishop Manuel Eugenio Salazar Mora has confirmed that Sisters Isabel and Cecilia Blanco Cubillo, from the congregation Dominicas de la Anunciata, managed a nursing home in Nicaragua.

Salazar Mora has urged supporters to pray for the church.
