Canada Wildfire Smoke Causes Visibility Reduction, Resulting in Delayed Northeast Flights in Hundreds

On Wednesday, June 7, 2023, New York City was covered in smoke from Canada’s wildfires, as reported by Leslie Josephs/CNBC.

The haze caused by the wildfires in Canada resulted in the delay of hundreds of flights at New York-area airports and in Philadelphia, reducing visibility in the region.

The FAA released a statement saying, “The FAA is now slowing traffic from the East Coast and Midwest bound for Philadelphia International Airport due to reduced visibility from wildfire smoke.” Earlier, flights bound for New York’s LaGuardia Airport were briefly halted. The FAA also stated that they will adjust the volume of traffic to account for the rapidly changing conditions.

Smoke from the wildfires in Canada drifted south and covered the New York City area on Tuesday into Wednesday, causing air quality to deteriorate and forcing residents indoors. As of noon Wednesday, the city ranked fourth in the world for worst air quality, with an IQAir World Air Quality Index of 158, a level considered unhealthy for all residents.
