The Final Fantasy 16 demo offers an early way to jump into the world of Square Enix’s newest RPG, but players might be hesitant to put in progress if they aren’t sure that it will carry over to the full game. Releasing on June 22 for the PlayStation 5, Final Fantasy 16 is finally close at hand for fans who have been waiting years for another new title in the series. With unusually mature stylings for the franchise and a turn away from Final Fantasy 15’s inconsistently successful open-world experiment, FF16 has the potential to deliver on fans’ wishes in a completely new way.
Although plans for a demo were established by Final Fantasy 16 producer Yoshi-P in November 2022, information on the FF16 demo’s release date has been surprisingly limited. Thanks to an appearance on PlayStation Network and Yoshi-P’s confirmation that the demo would arrive a couple of weeks before the game, however, fans are now expecting the experience to be playable on June 8. Also coinciding with the Summer Game Fest 2023 showcase event, this date would give players a comfortable window of time to sink their teeth in before the release of the full game.
This approach works out well for both Square Enix and consumers, letting players try their hand at Final Fantasy 16 while incentivizing purchases for those who play through the free material.
Although many diehard fans are no doubt set on playing through Final Fantasy 16 no matter what, the availability of the demo provides a great option for those even slightly unsure whether they want to pick it up. The ability to transfer a save file removes any possible negative consequences, meaning there’s no real reason not to get a jump on Final Fantasy 16’s release with the demo. This could work out especially well for fans on the fence about the new tone for the game or for players considering making FF16 their entry point for the series.
Final Fantasy 16 has been fighting FF7 Rebirth to win over the focus of fans’ anticipation, but if the demo wows players, this could be the perfect way for it to stake its claim ahead of release. The Free Trial available for FF14 has been a huge selling point for the MMO, and although this will no doubt be a smaller peek at FF16, there’s no reason it shouldn’t be a solid hook. No matter what decision players ultimately make about buying Final Fantasy 16, they can comfortably go into the demo knowing they’re not at risk of wasting their time.
