Businesses in Gaza express concerns as Israel suspends exports

Gaza City, Gaza Strip –⁢ Business owners in Gaza are concerned about the ⁣future ⁤of their work after Israel ⁤imposed a ban on all exports from the Gaza‌ Strip passing through the Karem Abu Salem crossing.

On Monday, Israeli ‍authorities announced a halt to‌ commercial exports from Gaza to Israel after ‍an‍ “alleged attempt ‍to⁣ smuggle explosives”. Karem Abu Salem is the only crossing Israel allows to be used for commercial shipments.

The move was condemned by Palestinian industrial and economic unions,‍ which warned of potential ‍economic and social consequences.

‘Production exceeds local demand’

Walid Ballour, who manages a factory making plastic pipes, told Al Jazeera the decision came as a⁢ shock.

“We were loading⁣ a car with an order ⁤of ⁣pipes for Ramallah when ‌the decision came,” Ballour⁤ said. “We have also three export orders on the schedule supposed to go out tomorrow to the West Bank, but they were stopped because of the decision.”
