Jason Clare, the education minister, addressed the teacher shortage crisis in Australia during an interview with ABC Breakfast. He emphasized the decline in young people pursuing teaching careers and the high attrition rate among teachers. Clare also highlighted the need for more support for teachers in the early years of their careers.
Clare mentioned that the number of people studying teaching at universities has decreased by 12% over the past decade. He also pointed out that while Victoria has seen a 10% increase in offers, the completion rate of the degree is low, with only 50% of students finishing the program and 20% quitting within the first three years of teaching.
In response to immediate actions to address the crisis, Clare suggested bringing teachers from overseas and encouraging former teachers to return to the profession to mentor new educators.
