Congress and Allies
Narendra Modi, a dominant political force in India, aims for a third consecutive term as prime minister, a feat achieved by only one other Indian leader.
Leading up to the election, a coalition of around thirty opposition parties formed the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) to challenge Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (B.J.P.) and its alliance, the National Democratic Alliance (N.D.A.).

As the results unfold, all eyes are on the performance of Modi’s B.J.P. In the previous election, the party secured a significant majority with 303 seats compared to just 52 for the main opposition party, the Indian National Congress.
For the Congress party to pose a credible challenge to Modi, it would need a substantial improvement in its electoral performance.
Bharatiya Janata Party (B.J.P.)
The B.J.P. has been in power in India since 2014, defeating a coalition led by the Indian National Congress. Initially a Hindu-nationalist movement, the B.J.P. shifted focus under Modi’s leadership towards Hindu-centric policies.
Indian National Congress
Founded in 1885 as part of the independence movement, the Indian National Congress played a pivotal role in India’s history. It led the government for several decades post-independence.
Bharatiya Janata Party (B.J.P.)
The B.J.P., rooted in Hindu nationalism, has been the ruling party in India since 2014. Under Modi’s leadership, it has emphasized Hindu-first policies.
